The common failures on higher-mileage cars

Wheel-speed sensors live at the hub, in the spray of road salt, water and grit thrown up by the tyres, and they are among the more common electrical failures on an ageing car. The sensor itself, its wiring, or the toothed ring it reads can corrode or clog, and the fault often comes and goes with temperature and vibration before becoming permanent. These are usually repairable at sensible cost, but the labour to reach a seized sensor can add up.

The hydraulic control unit - the module that pumps and modulates brake pressure - is the more serious failure. These units age, and internal electronic faults can disable ABS and ESP entirely.
